We highly recommend that when you sign up for your Shopify trial that you do so with an email address attached to a business PayPal account (so that you can use it to accept payments in your store). If you only have a personal PayPal account, you can turn it into a business account for free.

We also recommend that when creating your store that you use the Chrome Browser. While it is not required to complete this step, you will need it for later videos: so it is a good idea to start getting used to it now!

1. So, you’ll find a link to Shopify on this page. You can click on that to go to Shopify now. Please note, that is an affiliate link, which means I may get a commission if you use it. Using it is optional but it’s always appreciated, so thank you very much to everyone that does so!

2. Once you have come to Shopify, click ‘Start free trial’.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_02/Step-3.1-03.png

5. On this page, you need to fill in your details. I have blurred this video so you can’t see my private details. It’s important that you fill these details out correctly. These details are going to be used when issuing payments to you. So if you want to get paid and not have any issue receiving your money, be sure to fill out your details correctly. You need to fill in your name, address, phone number. You don’t need to enter a business website address. That is entirely optional. Once done, click ‘Enter my store’.

* Description
In this video, I’m going to show you how to add a print on demand provider and that is Printful.

Printful is the primary print on demand provider on this store that I am showing to you right now.Printful is what I use to fulfill all these orders.

The reason why I usually recommend Printify is because it’s a lot cheaper. However in the future, you might find that Printify doesn’t meet your needs anymore. The reason why I find Printify doesn’t suit my needs anymore is because, while there are a lot of suppliers, they don’t have a single supplier that sells all products that I sell. For example, this store sells crew neck tshirts and v-neck tshirts and sometimes customers will mitch and match and if I fulfill them with Printify, I will have to use 2 different suppliers for each of the tshirt and customers will get separate packages. Printful print in house, it means that when they create a v-neckl tshirt for me and a crew neck tshirt for me, they can ship that in one single package. So even though Printful is a lot expensive than Printify, it’s personally what I use.

So for a lot of new stores app, I would usually recommend Printify because they’re cost effective especially if you use some of their top proven providers such as Monster Digital. But if you’ve got a established store, and you’re looking for a print on demand provider who has experience then Printful should be the one you should consider.

Now, I’m going to show you how to add Printful and update the settings.

1. Start by going to Apps then click the Visit the Shopify Store button. Choose the account that’s connected to your Shopify store.

In the search bar, search for Printful.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_05/Printful-search.png

2. Once you find Printful, click on the Add App button. Then click the Install app button.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_05/Add-app.png

3. Click on Sign up with Google. Create a Printful account by typing in your email address. Click next then enter your password. Google will then need to verify your account. Next, enter the 6 digit verification code then click next.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_05/Connect.png

4. Next, agree to services terms then click Sign up button. On the next page, you can put anything you like. Once then, just click Finish then click on Connect store.

Then click on Accept All button on the top of the page.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_05/Accept-all.png

5. Now go to More, then select Settings.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_05/More-select-settings.png

6. On the settings menu on the side, click Packing Slip. Then select the image to upload.

Next, put your customer service email then click on Save.

 #+attr_html: :width 600px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_05/Packing-slip.png

7. You can click on the Preview button to see how the pages will look like. Asyou can see, it’s now customized for your store which makes it look professional because it looks like you sent them.

8. Now, click More and then Billing. We’re going to add a credit card or Paypal account to our store.

Click on Billing method then click Add billing method. You get to choose either Paypal or credit card. Printful is going to charge your Paypal or credit card each time a customer purchases an item. Once you’ve done that, you’ll see this on your Billing method.

 #+attr_html: :width 600px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_05/Billing.png

So for example, right now a shirt that I’m selling costs $13 and I charge $30 for it. What happens is the customer pays me $30 for the tshirt and then Printful will charge me $13. I don’t get the $13 immediately, what happens is the customer submits the money into my Shopify payments account, Shopify payments collects that $30 and pays out to me 2 days later. But in the meantime, Printful needs to be paid $13 for the tshirt and what they’ll do is that they take it out of the credit card that I have on file.

Go ahead and change these settings and on the next video, I will show you how to add a product in Printful.

** How To Choose A Factory & Create A Product With Printify

Now, I’m going to take you through how I personally create products with Printify, by using t-shirts as my example. If you’ve been following the Wholesale Ted YouTube channel for awhile now, then you’ll know that Printify isn’t my primary Print-On-Demand app I work with. Instead, the main app I work with is Printful, which I also teach inside The Ecomm Clubhouse. However, even though I primarily use Printful, the truth is, I usually recommend beginners start with Printify instead.

Why? Well it’s because Printify is way, WAY cheaper.

#+caption: printify: 12$ to produce AND ship
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex01-tshirt.png

Take this t-shirt I sell in my own Print-On-Demand business: the Bella+Canvas 3001. On Printify, it costs me around $12 to produce AND ship this. Whereas,

#+caption: printful tshirt - 12$ base price alone
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex01b-printful_tshirt.png

That base t-shirt costs $12.95 ALONE. And then there is an additional $4 for shipping. Granted, I do get bulk discounts with Printful, but they still can’t match the price I get with Printify. And something I also want to note: is that my $12 price I got with Printify was because I signed up for this: the Printify Premium Subscription, which is $29 a month.

#+caption: printify premium subscription
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex02a-printify_plan.png

This gives you a 15-20% discount on products, though not shipping costs. Obviously in the beginning, when you are brand new & haven’t sold anything, you don’t need to get this. But once you start selling items regularly, this is a no-brainer. It will quickly pay for itself.

** printful advantages

So why do I choose Printful? Well, it’s because there are some additional features that Printful offers, in-exchange for higher prices.

*** printful fulfillment

#+caption: printful fulfillment
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex03a-printful_fulfillment.png

For example, Printful have this: a fulfillment warehouse. Here, you can ship products that you buy in bulk from manufacturers and store them here.

#+caption: printful fulfillment ad
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex03b-printful_fulfillment.png

Then, when a customer buys one of these products from your store, Printful will see the order, find the item stored in their warehouse, package it up, and ship it out to the customer.

This is a more advanced version of dropshipping, and something new store owners don’t need access to.

** printify is still easier

And so the honest truth in my opinion, is that new store owners would benefit from Printify’s lower prices the most, over these features.

Of course, if you’d also like to use Printful anyway, I also teach how to use it in the video tutorial series after this one, so be sure to go watch that, if you’d prefer using Printful.

*** printify outsource factories

Now, something to remember and keep in mind, is that Printify is NOT a Print On Demand factory.

Nope. This is something that also makes it very different from Printful. Printful actually have their own factories. So when you order a product from Printful. It’s them that make it. But Printify don’t run or own any factories themselves. Instead, they partner with OTHER Print-On-Demand factories around the world. These factories can offer their products through Printify. So, for example, one of their Print On Demand providers is a factory called MWW.

*** MWW

MWW is indeed a family-owned, American-made Print On Demand factory based in North Carolina. People often think of the Printify factories as intangible things. But they’re not. They are real companies.

#+caption: printify mww about us
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex04a-printify_mww.png

And MWW has been around since the 1930’s, producing products on demand for companies. If you wanted, you could even visit their factory.

#+caption: printify mww product example
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex04b-printify_mww.png

MWW’s most popular products on Printify are their homeware, such as their shower curtains, their rugs & and their pillow cases.

*** printify is a middleman to POD providers

And so it is best to think of Printify, not as a Print-On-Demand provider per se, but instead, as an app, that lets you order products from Print On Demand providers, and track your orders.

This was actually a big advantage to me during the height of covid-19 worldwide lockdowns. Printful really struggled during Covid-19.

On one hand, their order number drastically increased, as people began to buy ecommerce products in record numbers, a trend which continues even today.

And secondly, because of new social distancing laws, they couldn’t output products as fast as they previously could. So they had more orders, but less supply.

Because of this, Printful production times soared to up to 28 business days which is entirely unacceptable for customers. Whereas because I was connected to Printify, I had access to a big range of factories. If one factory got shut down, because their city had to go into lockdown, that was OK, because I could switch to another one, and keep my business going. So the fact that Printify doesn’t produce items in-house, and instead work with multiple factories, means you massively mitigate your risk, which is another bonus to choosing Printify for beginners.

There is however a big downside to Printify’s multiple suppliers. Their quality can vary drastically. And so it’s really frustrating when I see people on YouTube leave comments like “I ordered a sample product from Printify and it was terrible.”

I see those comments and I say to the person: “Can you please stop spreading misinformation and confusing other people who are new? You didn’t order a product from Printify! Instead, you ordered a product from a factory that Printify connects to. Can you please tell us which factory you used. THAT would be helpful!”

** printify factories

*** monster digital

So, let me tell you the factories I’ve worked with, that I would work with again.

#+caption: printify factories - monster digital
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex05a-factories_monster.png

For clothing, my #1 choice is Monster Digital. Printify actually works extremely closely with Monster Digital, to ensure their quality is excellent. The clothing they produce is on-par with Printful, so I feel really good about using them for my products. Because Monster Digital’s quality is excellent, they are one of the most expensive factories to choose, and don’t always have the same selection of products. They purposefully keep their selection smaller, to maintain strong quality control. But it is worth it. During Christmas periods, Monster Digital have consistently met deadlines. This is my #1 recommended supplier.

*** DTG2Go

#+caption: printify factories - DTG2Go
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex05b-factories_dtg2go.png

DTG2GO is a company that I worked with, during COVID-19 lockdowns. Their prints were not as vibrant as Monster Digital’s, but my customers were still happy with the quality of the products they received. I have heard mixed reports about their Christmas production & shipping speeds. They also ended up getting impacted by COVID-19, but that isn’t their fault.

*** MWW

#+caption: printify factories - MWW
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex04b-printify_mww.png

And MWW is a company I’ve worked with. I haven’t sold their homeware, but I did sell their tote bags, and my customers were very happy.

** nothing is perfect

Another tip too: is that occasionally, print-on-demand providers will make mistakes. So if you see one person leave a comment on the internet like “I ordered a product for a customer from Monster Digital and it was messed up – avoid avoid!” Well, I’d tell you to AVOID those reviews.

The reality is production is never 100% going to be perfect, for any industry. You cannot expect 100% perfection. It’s inexperienced sellers with unrealistic expectations, that expect perfection.

And so the real issue I see with those comments, is they are often left on places like Reddit and YouTube, from small stores, that have not had many orders yet.

Think about it. If 1 in 100 products end up having a defect, then that defect could happen to anyone, at any time. And so if someone has, say, ordered 10 products so far from Monster Digital, and the defect happens to be in one of their 10 products, of course they will have a biased view.

Instead, I would recommend focusing on reviews from store owners like me, who have produced products at scale: who have made at least 100 products with a supplier, and have experience working with them at scale.

I have no idea how many orders I’ve done with Monster Digital at this stage. But I can tell you, I’ve produced WELL over 100 products, that’s for sure. And out of all of those: only 1 customer has ever complained.

#+caption: printify factories - MWW
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex06a-many_orders.png

*** don't bother with printify's review system for providers

And something else I want to explain is this: Printify’s review system. Prior to COVID-19, this was a good way to assess whether a supplier was reliable or not. But COVID-19 has essentially made this useless. If suppliers have any delays at all, even just a 1 day delay, their score gets dinged, massively. Printify haven’t updated their algorithms for the pre-covid world. So I don’t recommend paying much attention to this

If Monster Digital’s score is lower than the competition, it probably means that due to social distancing rules, they are producing products a little bit slower, but the quality more than makes up for it. Customers would prefer to wait an extra day or 2, to get a better product.

** lets make some products!

Alright. So that’s some background on Printify, and how they work. Let’s now discuss how to make products with them by using the most popular Print-On-Demand product, t-shirts, as our example product.

*** base tshirt examples

#+caption: Gildan 5000
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex07a-tshirt-gildan_5000.png

Now, I’m going to show you how to make a t-shirt with this: the Gildan 5000. This is the cheapest t-shirt that you can make with Printify. The Gildan 5000 is fine for beginners to start with, to keep costs low. However, the material is nowhere near as comfortable as

#+caption: Bella+Canvas 3001
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex07b-tshirt-bella_canvas_3001.png

But, since the majority of my subscribers to The Ecomm Clubhouse do not have an established store yet, we’re going to use the Gildan 5000 for our example tutorial. So, let’s do this!

*** create a tshirt

All right, let’s create a product in Printify. Once you have come to your Shopify store, you go to apps, you click on Printify, and then once you’re inside the Printify app, come and click on ‘Catalog’.

#+caption: Printify App Catalog
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex08a-printify_catalog.png

And of course, you’ve got all sorts of products. You don’t just have t-shirts and hoodies, children’s body suits, water bottles, flip-flops, hats. beach towels, fanny packs – there are so many different products that you can sell on Printify. However, we’re just going to choose a unisex t-shirt for now.

#+caption: Choose a Tshirt from the Catalog
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex08b-printify_choose_tshirt.png

Something to keep in mind is that even though Printify says they have over 250 products, each of these individual women’s t-shirts does count as their own product.

**** polo shirt
So you might think, well, why on earth does a Printify have so many different t-shirts? Well, the reason why they’ve got so many different ones to pick from is because they are for different needs. So for example, this one is a polo shirt. So if you wanted to sell a polo shirt, then you can come and choose this one.

#+caption: polo shirt
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex09a-tshirt_type-polo.png

**** all over print tshirt
And this one here is an all-over print t-shirt. So think of it like a tie dye t-shirt instead of just having a picture on the front, the design that you put onto this t-shirt goes all over the entire t-shirt, which is pretty cool. So that feels a very different type of need.

#+caption: all over print tshirt
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex09b-tshirt_type-allover.png

**** unisex
And then we’ve got several t-shirts in that fill the need of being designed for women’s bodies. But for us, of course, we’re going to choose this one here because this t-shirt fills our needs the best.

#+caption: unisex Gilden 5000
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex09c-tshirt_type-unisex.png

And it feels I need the best to being the cheapest unisex t-shirt that is available. The Gildan 5,000, it has a classic fit that runs true to size. What that means is that if a customer would normally purchase a large t-shirt and a retail store then, or large t-shirt, this will fit them.

If the t-shirt was small, or if it said that it didn’t run true-to-size or that it’s a slim fit, what that means then is that they would normally have to, if they would order a large t-shirt in a retail store that a large t-shirt and a small fit would not fit them.

But because this t-shirt runs true to size and means in that customers are going to be able to very easily pick a t-shirt that’s right for them, which means you’re going to have a lot less returns now because of the fact that this one here is the cheapest t-shirt, it means seeing that it’s already a hundred percent cotton.

**** bella+canvas 3001

Now I’ll show you the t-shirt that I sell in my store, the Bella + Canvas 3001, which I’ve already discussed.

#+caption: black bella+canvas 3001
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex09d-tshirt_type-bella_canvas_3001.png

So this t-shirt here is made from 100% soft cotton. So this t-shirt is definitely nicer to wear, which means that if you sell this t-shirt, customers are more likely to come back and order more, however, it costs more. So right now, I’m signed into my Printify premium subscriptions so I’ve got Printify premium pricing. Your pricing is going to be a little bit more, most are charging $8.05 for this t-shirt with $4 for shipping.

*** shipping costs

#+caption: shipping
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex10a-shipping.png

As you can see, different suppliers have different shipping costs. Most of digital’s is $4 with $8.05 for the actual product price itself. However, if we come back to the Gildan 5000, you’ll see that it’s about $2 cheaper.

#+caption: $2 cheaper
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex10b-shipping_cheaper.png

Now $2 may not seem like much, but when you’re just starting out and you’ve got a low startup budget, I understand that you want to keep costs lower, which is why I usually recommend that people pick this t-shirt when they’re starting out. And once they’ve got a design that’s selling great, they switch on over to the Bella + Canvas 3001.

*** unisex gives you more options in suppliers

And the reason why I’m also showing you how to set up a unisex t-shirt is because that’s the type of t-shirt most people want to sell, because that way, you’re not limited towards one gender. So you’ve got a wider audience to market to obviously. If you’re selling something that’s very female specific or very male specific, you may want to consider a female or male t-shirt, but in general, unisex is the right choice for most niches. You’re also gonna discover that you’re going to have lots of different suppliers to work with.

#+caption: supplying a unisex shirt
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex10c-shipping_unisex.png

*** the US is the best place to sell

So for example, if your customers are primarily based in Canada, you could come and work with the supplier, Duplium. However, for most people, you’re going to be having your customers mostly based in the United States because the United States is one of the easiest countries to sell.

And if you were selling within Europe, you would have to deal with the European Union’s return laws, which are quite complicated and annoying. So by targeting Americans and selling within America, when you’re first getting started, it’s a whole lot easier, no matter where in the world you live.

** make the product

*** start designing

And it doesn’t matter where you live in the world. If you live in New Zealand, like me, your supplier is based in America so it’s no different whether you live in America or not. So we’re going to come and click ‘Start Designing’.

#+caption: click 'start design'
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex11a-design_start.png

*** add design

Alright, so what you do is come and click ‘Add your design.’

#+caption: click 'add design'
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex11b-design_add.png

*** choose the image
Click on ‘My Device.’

#+caption: choose image from device
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex11c-design_image.png

All right. Click on the design you want to use and click ‘Open.

#+caption: 'open'
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex11d-design_image.png

**** resolution

You want to make sure that your doc design is high resolution. If it sees medium resolution, low resolution, then you need to get a higher resolution design. It makes sure that it is high resolution. Now you can drag and drop this design around that you want. You’ve only got this box to work in though. So I’m going to keep in mind too.

#+caption: high resolution
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex11e-design_hires.png

**** alignment

Is there outside of just dragging and dropping it? You can get more specific. So if I want this designed to be hard up against the top and in the center, I’d click this top align button to bring it to the very top of the box and then come and click the centered one, to align it in the center.

#+caption: adjusting alignment
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex11f-design_alignment.png

This is what the vast majority of you want to do, unless you have a specific reason that you want it to be smaller and placed somewhere differently.

**** fitting
You want to design and you want to put your design to make it as wide as possible to fill the box as much as possible and to then put it to the top of the box and center

It’s something that Printify can do for you, which is nice because not all print-on-demand providers do this. They already have a nice gap between your design and the collar. Some print-on-demand providers, including Printful, don’t have this big gap here. You have to allot for yourself , which is really annoying, but Printify already has a gap there so you don’t have to worry about your design being too high up against the collar.

#+caption: fit image to shirt
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex11g-design_fitting.png

**** color variations
Alright, so you’ve put your design onto your product. Now if your product has different color variations, come here, click this, and then choose which colors you want just by ticking them. So a lot of people ask me, “How many product colors should I have Sarah?“ If my product does come in different colors, while there is no specific concept, but you think about it. If you want to present yourself as a high end t-shirt brand or clothing brand or store in general, a high end clothing brand or a product brand only wants to put their best foot forward. They want their t-shirts to look awesome.

They would want to pick colors that could give off the best visual appearance. Don’t just offer other colors because you can. Instead, a nice number to aim for is to pick the five best colors.

#+caption: color variation
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex12a-variation-color.png

**** you need a separate version for black

Now you may have noticed that I have selected did black and you can’t really see my design on the black t-shirt because my design is black. It is going to print differently. It’s not going to appear just as the same color black as the black color of a t-shirt. It’s a different shade to the black that I’m printing onto it, but it’s still terrible. You don’t want this. So your designs that work well on a white t-shirt are often very different to designs that work well on a black t-shirt and Printify knows this.

***** make specifically for black
So if you’ve got a product like this with a sort of variation, what you’ll be able to do is you’ll be able to click this button ‘Make a specific design for black’.

#+caption: make specific design for black
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex12b-variation-black1.png

***** delete previous black

Now you can delete the one we just added before.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex12b-variation-black2.png

***** add a layer for the black specific

And then click ‘Add layer’.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex12b-variation-black3.png

***** choose the iamge

Then click ‘My device’.Pick a design that you’ve made for the black t-shirt. So for me here, I’m uploading a design where instead of featuring black characters, it’s featuring white characters. Click ‘Open’.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex12b-variation-black4.png

***** adjust the image on the shirt

And I’m going to do the same thing. I’ll click on the design then I’m going to bring this one to the very top and make sure it’s centered by clicking these.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex12b-variation-black5.png

Now it hasn’t deleted my design or my white t-shirt or my sports gray, charcoal or light blue t-shirt. It’s just created a different one for the black t-shirt.

***** black has a very high converting rate

And it’s often a really good idea to do this because black has the highest converting color overall. I think for this design here, that is probably not going to be the highest converting color. I suspect that a sports gray or charcoal would end up being the highest converting color, but usually black has the highest converting color. So once you’ve picked the colors that you want, you can also preview your design by clicking the ‘Preview’ button.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex11h-design_preview.png

*** save the product

Now you can check it out on a mockup, which is really nice and see how it looks great. So once you have done this, you can click the save product.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex11i-design_save.png

*** choose thumbnail

All right, we are almost done. Come and click ‘Edit listing’.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex13a-thumbnail-edit.png

**** choose the design for the thumbail

Now we need to choose which design, which color we think will be the best as the product thumbnail. So usually black’s the best option because oftentimes black can be the best option because black has the highest converting design. But I think for this one here, I think that probably the sports gray is going to be one of my highest converting colors. And it’s really easy to see the picture on it as the thumbnail. So I’m going to choose this sports gray and then click ‘Next.’

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex13b-thumbnail-next.png

**** give product title and size table

Now the product title and description that we have here is not going to be the one that we’re going to stick with. We’re actually going to edit it on the Shopify product page. But for now, we want to just give it an identifying product title. This way, we’ll be able to easily find it when we come to edit it later. You can just keep the description as it is. Also, come and click, ‘Add a size table’.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex13c-thumbnail-size_title.png

**** delete tags and use imperial metric
And let’s delete the tags. Choose your sizing table to be Imperial, unless you are specifically targeting a country where they use Metric. But obviously we’re talking in the United States, so we’re Imperial and then come and click ‘Next’.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex13d-thumbnail-tags.png

**** set price

Now set your product price. It is so much faster to set your product price now rather than later, but you can modify your product prices later. It’s just very easy to do it now. So pick what product price you plan to sell your t-shirts for and something you are going to notice is that the larger t-shirts, they do cost more. And the reason why they cost more is because there’s more fabric involved in making them.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex13e-thumbnail-pricing.png

It’s a little frustrating that you can’t charge somebody more for having a 2XL t-shirt compared to a small t-shirt. That would not be considered acceptable. So make sure that you price all the t-shirts the same, and just be aware that when a customer comes and purchases a large t-shirt, your profit margins will be smaller. Luckily of course, most customers end up purchasing t-shirts within the small to XL range.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex13f-thumbnail-pricing.png

*** publish
So it’s not something you have happened often, but be aware that your margins will be slightly eaten into when customers pick a larger t-shirt. You should make sure though that you’re selling as many sizes as possible. Then come and click ‘Next.’

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex14a-publish.png

And then you just want to come and click ‘Publish product to your Shopify store’. And then you want to come and click ‘Publish’.

#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_06/ex14b-publish.png

And boom! It has been created and published to the store.

* Description
In this video, I’m going to teach you how to get instant designs for your print on demand products in Shutterstock. They sell the license and rights to use the artwork from there. Admittedly, it is not cheap but as you watch this video you’ll find out that it’s cheaper than hiring a designer in Fiverr.

There are two types of licenses in Shutterstock. The first type of license allows you to use the images for non commercial products and the second type of license allows you to use for commercial products. So if you need images to use for a website your making you can purchase the Standard license, but to use it for a tshirt you are selling, you need to purchase the extended license.

There are also lots of patterns in Shutterstock. Patterns looks good in pillows or a dog bed.

#+caption: dog bed
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_11/d01-Dog-bed.png

They also look good on blankets, rugs and yes, on shower curtains!

There’s something important to note though, anyone can purchase the same artwork as you on Shutterstock. You do not have exclusive rights to it. So if you start selling a super hot product, a competitor can come in and purchase the same artwork to sell. what you can do is to hire a designer to slightly tweak or modify the artwork, to have your own custom version of it.

Now, I’m going to show you how to use Shutterstock. Note that we need the Enhance image licenses so that we can legally put them in the products we are selling. To purchase and enhance the images we need to pay more. In minimum, we need buy 2 licenses to get them as a bundle. Check out the pricing below.

#+caption: shutterstock licensing
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_11/d02-Shutterstock-pricing.png

Yeah, it is expensive. But it will be useful when you have a super hot selling product that don’t have a great upsell with it and you need to make on asap, Shutterstock can save you a lot of money. Why? Because hiring a designer on Fiverr, it usually take them at least three days to deliver the design. So that means, 3 days of lost sales.

Now, go to Shutterstock. I’ll have a link to it on this page. Go to the drop down menu beside the search bar and select Illustrations.

#+caption: searching illustrations on shutterstock
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_11/d03a.png

Then type in your niche on the search bar. For me, I’m going to type in my niche coffee and I’m also going to use another niche to cross-sell with which is unicorn.

#+caption: typing unicorn niche in the search bar
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_11/d03b.png

All you have yo do now is browse through the results and choose what image you like the most. As you can see there is a lot to choose from. Click on the image you like and make sure that you click on the JPEG button. Next, is to tick the box to change it into enhance license. Then click Download.

#+caption: enhancing license
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_11/d03c.png

Next, select the image pack you want. I’m going to purchase two images. Then click on Buy and Download button. Then enter your payment details. Make sure to untick the order renewal box so that you don’t get charged automatically when the license expires. Then click on Complete Checkout button.

#+caption: select image pack
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_11/d03d.png

Once you’ve done that, it will automatically download the file in your computer. So now, we’re going to do a few tweaks with the image we’ve purchased. Since it’s in the JPEG format, so we have to convert it to a PNG file first. We need to do this to change the background into a transparent one because once we put in on our products, the white background will not look good. Here’s an example:

#+caption: example of why white background on image looks bad
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_11/d04-White-background.png

Luckily, there are lots of software that we can use to remove the white background. A good one is Photopea. You don’t have to create an account, you can instantly use it and it’s FREE!

#+caption: example of photopea
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_11/d04b-Photopea.png

Now let’s go to Photopea so that I can show you how to edit an image. From the top left corner, click on File and then select the image that you want to edit. To remove the background click on the brush icon on the side menu and choose the magic wand.

#+caption: selecting magic wand
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_11/d04c-Magic-Wand.png

Once you’ve done that, click on the white background and then you will see that lines will appear over the area to be deleted. Then come up to Edit then click on Clear from the dropdown menu.

#+caption: clearing background
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_11/d04d-Clear.png

See how the background has now become checkered and that means we were successful in deleting it. When you’re happy with your picture you can save it as PNG. To do that, click on File, click Export then select PNG. Make sure the quality is in 100% then click Save. And that’s it!

* Description
We have listed down the tips that Michael have shared with us during the interview. If you’re interested in learning how Michael do it, you can get more training from him by clicking the “Get More Training From Michael” button above.

** Do you have some tips for our viewers on how to create awesome designs?

When you’re doing research, make sure you’re not copying anyone’s design but instead use it as an inspiration. Websites to go to get ideas: Pinterest, Google Trends, Different holidays – Christmas , Holidays. Design wise, you have to understand your customers and also understand the trends.

** What are the 3 mistakes that you see new sellers make when creating designs?

- Copy other peoples design – make sure that you’re not violating anyone’s trademark right. Do your research.
- Adding too much variance – it will slow down your site and will confuse your buyers when there’s so many colors to choose from. When selecting colors, make sure that your designs works well with the shirt color.
- Falling in love with your own design – understand that the design is not for you but for the customer. Do proper testing and don’t overspend on testing.

** What’s your favorite products to print on to?

Tshirts and I’ve been also testing jerseys lately and they’re working really well.

** Any tips for choosing what types of mugs to sell?

The white 11oz mug and the best price range that works for me that I’ve tested is $16.95. For summertime, tumblers do really well.

** What’s the biggest mistake new sellers make when selling print on demand products?

The surface area is very important. When you have a design for a tshirt and print it on a smaller product like the pendant, the text would not be visible so you have to make sure that your design matches whatever product you’re printing on. You should always upload and see the mock up to see if it’s good or not.

** Are there any types of products that works well together?

Tshirts go well with tote bags. And even sneakers, if you a nice background with a design in the center of the sneaker, that can work as well. Just keep in mind the sizing of the text.

** When creating upsells, do you like to repurpose the same design and put it on a different product?

Yeah, if something is working, you sell more of it. So if you have a winning pro

** How do you encourage the customer to come back and buy from you asap?

Email marketing – email them at least once a week but it doesn’t have to be an offer always, it can be about your company.

** Do you add scarcity on your product pages?

I do but I use it sparingly. And I use an app for it and best to use it on a single product.Too many scarcity apps on your page slows it down. Just have one app that works and maybe split test some apps.

** 3 tips for increasing average order value

- Sell the same product, selling another tshirt with bigger discount.
- You can offer warranties for a certain price.
- Skip the line. Charge $12.95 and the customer can skip the line, maybe process their orders right away.

** What is more effective having the image from your POD provider or using a lifestyle image for you ads?

I always say lifestyle image just because it lets people see themselves wearing that shirt and also creates more engagement on Facebook. And also, the beauty of mock-ups is that you can select the mock-ups that you’re targeting.

** Have you ordered any product and create a video ad for them?

Yes, I do. Order your own shirt not just to see the quality but also to create a unique ad set for your ads.

** For split testing between image and video, what have you seen here?

It’s a split decision. Video gives you a lot of engagement. Image converts higher. I’ve tested both just to see how the algorithm works.

** Do you have multiple experiences of having to test multiple designs to find the winning product?

In terms of testing, even now when I test designs, it still takes a few attempts even though I have an eye and a graphic designer. You still have to print out and test it first. Even if it converts, it might not be scaleable. You have to test to see what will work for your niche. There’s so many different options to do testing. If didn’t work, go back to the drawing board.

** You said, you might have a design that converts but it might not be scaleable? What do you mean by that?

You might get sale sin the beginning but it’s not actually viral, you can’t get it to work at a certain time. Facebook works in a way that they will give you traffic in the beginning, but once you increase the budget they will decline. So you have to consistently get that sales volume before you decide to scale and add budget.

** With Facebook Pixel getting so much data, is it easier now to launch new products?

Yeah, once you have data, it’s more mature so it’s easier for you to scale. You can use that data to scale like look alike audiences. When you have traffic, it gives you an advantage, now you have buyers and you can leverage that data to find other buyers.

** Could you explain what are look alike audiences and why it’s so powerful?

Look alike audience, is basically an audience side, first you have custom audience and Facebook sees that data and compare it with the data point to create other audiences similar to the audiences you’re targeting.

** What are 3 tips you can give to our audience to increase the effectiveness of their ads while they’re starting out?

- Have different ad creatives. Split test to see which will work. Always have different text and descriptions to test.
- You have to keep up with the different algorithm changes. Understand how the algorithm works.
- Understand the learning phase. When you launch an ad, there is a certain time that Facebook is learning about your audience, so you have to let the ad set sit and if you touch it too much it’s going to mess up the algorithm.

** What the single mistake new stores make when it comes to Facebook ads?

Not understanding the data or not having the right KPI. Some people will launch an add and they will be too scared to keep it on for a few days. Follow the blueprint that you are following and follow the data. Try to understand the system and eventually you will have your own system as well. Don’t be afraid to spend on advertising.

** One final tip about print on demand?

It works perfectly with drop shipping. Some people think, it’s either one or the other. Even if you do drop shipping and you add that into the system, you won’t have any problems. The only thing is always double check the shipping rates but for me it’s the perfect pair. I think it’s a great combination.

* Notes

* Description
** finding a good supplier
In this video, we’re now going to identify which supplier on Aliexpress to dropship the products from.

*** example
A top selling product on Aliexpress is the self stirring mug. Well, if you were to come to Aliexpress, you would find lots and lots of suppliers to choose from! How can you choose which supplier of this self stirring mug that you want to dropship from? Well, luckily, there is some criteria that you can use to help you do that. What we essentially are going to do is we are going to identify which supplier is the most experienced at selling this item, while shipping it out reliably to our customers.

** chinese suppliers
*** basics
I also want to clarify something else: in this video, we are going to focus entirely on how to select the best supplier that is based in China.

Here is the thing about most suppliers on Aliexpress. Most of them manufacture their products in China, and store them exclusively in a warehouse based in China. And so, when a customer say, in the USA, buys the item from you, Your supplier will put your item on a plane, and fly it to your customer through international air shipping. This usually takes anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks.

*** suppliers that ship to the us
However, some suppliers are a bit different. Some suppliers will ship in bulk the items that they manufacture by cargo boat, to countries like the USA. They will then store them in a storage warehouse locally.

#+caption: supplier that ships to the US
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_15/d01.png

This is an example of a supplier that does that. You can tell, because it has this additional option on the product page to change which country the item is shipped from. This item can be shipped from within the USA. And when it is, it will be shipped with USPS shipping. This will take 4-13 days on average with USPS standard shipping. It will be shipped via their local ground service.

*** chinese dropshipper pro v con
So as a dropshipper, you can either choose to dropship products from China, or from the country you are targeting, which for most people, is the USA. Both have their own pros and cons. A pro for China dropshipping is it is cheaper. China has not only streamlined international shipping so it’s super cheap, but because suppliers are not having to rent warehouses in America, the costs to buy the items is lower too. However, A con is that it takes 2-4 weeks for the item to arrive & has to come by plane. With USA local dropshipping, you pay more, but your customer gets their item faster without a gas-guzzling plane ride!

But, on the other hand, a pro for China dropshipping is, understandably, most companies prefer to exclusively store their products in China. So you will have more products to choose from. However, A con is that it’s easier for international shipping to get disrupted. During the height of the covid-19 crisis, shipping was massively disrupted, and sometimes took 5 to 8 weeks!

And during holidays, like Christmas & especially Chinese New Year, international shipping is also disrupted due to super popular demand.

So there are pros and cons. You will need to weigh them up and make a personal choice. For me, since I prefer stability over making the most money, I prefer USA dropshipping.

So in my next video, I’ll show you how to identify the best USA dropshipper for your products. For now though, let’s focus exclusively on China dropshippers.

So switch over to Aliexpress now, and look for China dropshippers that meet certain criteria.

** finding a chinese dropshipper
*** criteria
1. – Must have at least 25 recent orders.

2. – Must be at least 2 years old.

3. – Must have at least a 95% positive feedback score.

4. – Must have at least 10 reviews on their product listing with a rating of 4.5 or higher.

*** other factors
In the event that I find multiple suppliers that meet this criteria, which I probably will, I’m then going to choose a supplier that overall has the highest feedback score.

A high feedback score means we can sit back, relax, and not worry that our supplier will mess us around, and not send out the products to customers. Having unhappy customers asking you when your products will arrive, is frustrating. It is even worse if they start asking for refunds!

The easiest way to avoid that, is to prioritize suppliers with the best feedback, that you know you can trust. There is something else I am going to look for as well: I’m going to focus on looking for suppliers that have either one or both of the super fast, cheap international shipping options.

*** international shipping options (ePacket)
One of these is the most famous shipping option called ePacket. This was a shipping option created in 2011 as a joint effort between China Post & USPS to offer cheap, fast shipping from China to the USA for small packages. It usually costs $1-3, and items arrive on average within 2-4 weeks, but when shipping is not disrupted, it can be as little as 10 to 14 days.

However, ePacket shipping has come under fire. Part of why it’s cheap is because China has in the past negotiated deals with countries like the USA to subsidize it. Well, a lot of countries, including the USA, don’t want to subsidize it. So ePacket isn’t my favorite form of shipping from China anymore.

Instead, it is a new form of shipping that Aliexpress & China have created called “Aliexpress Standard Shipping.” Sometimes, as you can see, it can even be cheaper & faster than ePacket! They have made this as a backup option, in case ePacket gets removed. But, as long as your item has either of these – it should be fine.

Even if your supplier doesn’t offer Aliexpress Standard Shipping yet, if ePacket were to get removed, they’d almost certainly switch to it.

So, let’s do this: let’s go through an item and I’ll show you which supplier I would have chosen for it.

1. Go to Aliexpress and search for your product.

 #+caption: search for product
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_15/d02a.png

2. Sort the items by orders.

 #+caption: sort by order
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_15/d02b.png

3. Open up the a listing of your product. As you can see, our supplier here has 92 reviews.

 #+caption: open listing
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_15/d02c.png

4. Check the product review score. Our supplier here also has 4.9 reviews – which exceeds our minimum of 4.5.

 #+caption: check reviews
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_15/d02d.png

1. And it has a lot more than 25 orders. As you can see, it’s made 213 orders.

 #+caption: see number of orders
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_15/d02e.png

2. It is also more than 2 years old and has a Positive Feedback Score more than 95%.

#+caption: check age and see feedback score
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_15/d02f.png

7. And to wrap it up, they also have Aliexpress Standard Shipping to the USA.

 #+caption: check shipping type
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_15/d02g.png

This a great supplier!

So do this for every supplier you’ve chosen, and identify which ones meet our criteria, and which ones don’t.

** find the number of ratings

Another tip is the number of followers. This one has 6250 followers which means that I’m certain that the store has overall sold a lot more.

So let’s come and click Visit Store.

#+caption: click on visit store
#+attr_html: :width 500px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_15/d03a.png

Then, come and click Feedback.

#+caption: where to find the feedback link on the store page
#+attr_html: :width 500px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_15/d03b.png

As we can see this store has 3651 ratings and is proven to have a far history in selling more products. So this is a good store to select.

#+caption: check the ratings, year open, followers, etc.
#+attr_html: :width 500px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_15/d03c.png

And that’s it!

Now you know how to find the right Chinese suppliers to work with when selling your items in your store. Be sure to follow the criteria and the steps outlined above for your items.

* Notes

* Description

- In this video, we’re going to instead focus on how to pick a supplier based in the USA to dropship from.

- Because remember, Aliexpress suppliers are all China-based manufacturers. For some of these manufacturers, they store their products exclusively in China.

** ships and 'no ships'

*** no shipping option
If they store their products exclusively in China, then their product listing will look like this. It will have no ‘Ships From’ option.

#+caption: ali express not showing any "ships from" option
#+attr_html: :width 800px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_16/d01.png

*** shipping option
But some Aliexpress suppliers will put their products onto boats, and ship their products in bulk to the USA. And store them in warehouses. They will then let you dropship products direct from their USA based warehouses.

#+caption: ali express showing a "ships from" option
#+attr_html: :width 800px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_16/d02-ships_from.png

If they have this option, you’ll see it on their product listing. They will have a “Ships From” option, and you will be able to select which country. Since most people focus on the USA, since it’s the easiest country for beginners to sell in, and the country I recommend people focus on selling to, this is what you would look for: suppliers with USA warehouses. Something you may also have noticed is that this supplier doesn’t just ship from the USA: they ship from other countries too. So why do I keep talking about the USA?

*** dropship from the USA to the USA if possible

Well it’s because when it comes to marketing, for most new store owners, I recommend focusing your marketing, such as your Facebook ads, towards USA customers.

Why the USA? Well: it’s currently the biggest economy in the world. And in the USA, there is a strong culture of buying products online.

And so, even if like me, you don’t live in the USA: I truly believe it’s the most beginner friendly country to sell too. They have relaxed laws and lots of eager customers. Even though I live in New Zealand, the USA is my main country I sell to.

And there is no disadvantage. Because I have suppliers based locally in the USA, it’s not like I have to ship products from New Zealand to my customers in the USA.

It’s my local supplier that ships them to my customers with local, ground shipping. So there is no disadvantage for me, living outside the USA, selling to USA customers, thanks to dropshipping.

**** advantage to dropshipping from China
Now, I can imagine another question some of you are asking is, well OK Sarah, why would anyone ever choose to dropship from China to the USA? What advantage would there be?

Well, there are two reasons why a lot of people choose to dropship from China to the USA.

1. One reason is that the products are cheaper if you dropship them directly from China.
 - Because you think about it: those suppliers have to pay extra costs to store their products locally in the USA. So those extra costs get rolled into the price you pay.

2. And secondly, as you can imagine, not all Chinese manufacturers want to bother with the hassle of storing their items in a foreign location. So some exclusively store their products in China, because it’s easier. That means if you choose to dropship from China, you’ll have more products to pick from.

**** advantage to dropshipping from the US
However, when you dropship from the USA, you get two big advantages.

1. One is faster, local, more environmentally friendly ground shipping with USA ground shipping options like USPS.

2. And secondly, you’ll get more reliable shipping.

During the midst of the covid-19 crisis, international flights were massively disrupted. And so China to USA shipping times sometimes took 5 to 8 weeks!

And during holiday seasons, like Christmas and especially Chinese New Year, international shipping gets disrupted due to extremely high demand, yet less people working.

That’s what I prefer: I prefer to earn less money, but have a stable business, which is why I like using local USA suppliers since most of my customers are USA based.

However, it’s entirely up to you. If you prefer dropshipping from China, my previous video focused on that, and I highly recommend watching it.

** example of finding and using USA dropshipper
But, if you would prefer to dropship from the USA, then keep watching, because that’s what we’re going to look for now: USA based suppliers!

*** 5 criteria
What I’m going to do is I’m going to be looking for suppliers that meet 5 criteria.

#1 – Must have at least 25 recent orders.

#2 – Must be at least 2 years old.

#3 – Must have at least a 95% positive feedback score.

#4 – Must have at least 10 reviews on their product listing with a rating of 4.5 or higher.

#5 – Must tell us exactly what type of USA ground shipping they will use.

*** smaller selection of US dropshippers
Something you’ll quickly discover, if you take an item, and look for USA dropshippers after looking for China dropshippers, is that you will have a much smaller selection.

That is absolutely fine: most people prefer to save money, and dropship straight from China where it’s cheaper, which is why they have more reviews.

You may also find that there simply isn’t a supplier that meets this criteria in the USA. And if so, that is OK. Just head back to the product research video, and look for more products.

*** find a us dropshipper
So, let’s do this: let’s look for USA based dropshippers!

1. In the Aliexpress page, click on the Location/Currency. Then make sure United STates is selected as the location. Then click ‘Save’.

#+caption: set location to USA
#+attr_html: :width 700px

* Notes

* Description
** intro
- Now that we’ve selected what types of products people want to sell, let’s now move on to a question that I get asked a lot here at the Ecomm Clubhouse, and that is this – “Sarah, how should I price my products?”

- And by the way, this is actually an updated video. So if you’ve previously watched my pricing video in the past, I highly recommend that you watch this one too. My other video was a little bit confusing, admittedly. So hopefully this updated version should be a lot clearer for this video. We are mostly focusing on how to price your frontend products. A front end product is the first product that a customer sees, not an upsell product. Although by using the profit calculations that I’m going to teach you in this video, you should probably be able to easily choose how you’re going to price your upsell products as well.

- Now I’m going to be brutally honest with everybody here. People often ask me this question, hoping for magical answers, some magical price that they should price their products at for the highest conversion rate. But unfortunately, that’s not how this works. Pricing is subjective.

** tshirts
*** basics shopify store
- Let’s take t-shirts. If you walk into a target store, you’ll find graphic tee shirts for $10, $15 or $20. And if you go into a well-branded print on demand store, such as smash transit, which got it started on Etsy and then expanded into its own Shopify store, you’ll find t-shirts there for $30 each i.e. $29 and 50 cents.

 #+caption: smash transit shopify store
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d1.png

*** hyper expensive brand
And if you go and buy t-shirts from a design, a brand such as Supreme, well, you’ll pay up to $400. Sometimes even more.

 #+caption: overpriced tshirt at supreme
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d2.png

** basic charging
 - For me personally, I sell my tee shirts for $30 plus $4 for shipping, usually unless I’m running a special offer. So what does all this tell you? All of this variation tells you that there is no perfect price. So if you were hoping for a specific, magical answer. Unfortunately, I can’t give you one. However, while there is no perfect price, there are some best practices to use when choosing how to price your products. And that is what I’m going to teach you.

 - And even more importantly, I’m going to tell you what not to price your product set. And we’re going to start first of all, with print-on-demand products and then move on to pricing products that you would buy from AliExpress for dropshipping.

 - So with print-on-demand, while it is true, that pricing is subjective. You don’t want to price your products too low. Otherwise you will make no profit after expenses. So let’s use t-shirts for example, on print to find the lowest cost tee shirt is the Gildan 5000.

 #+attr_html: :width 500px

 - This is a great t-shirt to start with and what I recommend for beginners. And once you have a top-selling design, you can let us switch to my favorite, but more expensive. T-shirt the Bella+Canvas 3001. This is what I sell because it’s a nicer t-shirt for customers.

 #+caption: Printify Bella+Canvas 3001
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d4.png

- However, in the beginning, until you find a winning design that customers love, the Gildan 5000 is a great starting t-shirt to keep costs low in the beginning. Well, with my favorite Printify factory, Monster Digital, they will make a Gildan 5000 t-shirt for you for $7.91.

*** find the shirt costs (monster)
 #+caption: Monster Digital tshirt company
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d5.png

- So let’s take this number $7.91, and now come to your chosen supplies, shipping prices page, and find the cost to ship the t-shirt. Remember in this course, we are building a store that is focused on USA customers. So most of digital charge, $4 to ship a tee-shirt within the USA.

- So at these two prices together, $7.91 plus $4, it’s $11.92.

#+caption: Monster Digital rates for different areas

*** apply to a payment processor (paypal)
- But that isn’t all. We also need to account for the fact that payment processes have processing fees. So Shopify payments and PayPal will charge you for using the service. There’s no way around this. They definitely need to charge these fees because they have to process these payments for us and out of the two, PayPal does have the highest fees.

- So we’re going to use PayPal fees as our base for figuring out how much we should charge for our products. Here’s a fee calculator for PayPal, which I have included a link above. So what I’ve done is I’ve typed in $11.91 and then selected the ‘To receive this..’ button.

**** domestic
 #+caption: Paypal Calculator
 #+attr_html: :width 700px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d7.png

- This tells me the index received is $11.91, which is the money I need to receive to be able to pay for my product production and shipping phase to Monster Digital over at Pintify, I will need to charge at least $12.57, which we can round up to $13.

 #+caption: calculating payments
 #+attr_html: :width 700px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d8.png

**** international
- However, something to keep in mind to say, if you live out inside the United States like I do, then you’re going to have to use PayPal’s international fees instead. So just switch over to the international paper fees, which are slightly higher.

 #+caption: international fees
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d9.png

- And when we do this, we see that to receive $11.91, we need to change at least $12.77, which of course we will round up to $13.

 #+caption: international fees
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d10.png

*** doing better than breaking even

- But this is our break-even price point without accounting for any other costs. So that means then that if you’re using a free traffic strategy, that doesn’t cost you any money such as Google SEO traffic, then you need to charge at least $13. And the same would apply if you had a different type of free traffic strategy, such as an Instagram main page. If you had an Instagram main page and you were driving free traffic from that, then your break-even price point is $13.

**** prestige pricing (round it)
- However, nobody wants to break-even. We all want to make money, right? So in actuality, you probably want to go and price your t-shirt. It’s more like $20, but it’s important when you do this, that you don’t charge $20 exactly. And see it take a few cents off of that. Price could charge $19.99 or $19.97 or $19.95. The most important thing is that you be consistent with this. So don’t charge $19.97 for some t-shirts and then $19.99 for others. Use the exact same cents for all of your products, pricing your products to a round number like $20 as associated with expensive clothing brands like Gucci, because they do this. Customers expect this type of pricing for high-end products. This type of pricing strategy is therefore “prestige pricing”.

 #+caption: overpriced gucci tshirt
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d11.png

**** why use normal pricing ($19.95, etc)
- And if you try to use it for products that are not high-end, you will look foolish and look like you don’t know what you’re doing. So customers will trust you less.

**** include advertising costs (facebook)
- And by the way, this is allowing for free shipping. So you would say that your t-shirt costs $19.95 with free shipping. However, while $19.95 would be a great price for a t-shirt, if you had free traffic, it would not be suitable if you were paying for traffic, such as using Facebook ads. And this is because Facebook ads can be expensive. So we need to allow for the cost of the Facebook ad when we are pricing our product. So if you’re using paid ads for print-on-demand products, here’s a pricing strategy. I would recommend you take the base product price from your print-on-demand supplier, which in this case here is $7.91 and multiply it by 2. So we come to $15 and 82 cents.

 #+caption: supercheap tshirt
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d12.png

**** include shipping
- And then at your shipping, which of course is $4. So now our base price is $19 and 82 cents.

 #+caption: monster price listing
 #+attr_html: :width 700px

**** conclusion
And this example, and both come to a very similar number. We would want to charge $21. So basically to break, even with a Facebook ad, you want to charge at least $21 i.e., $20.99. But this is just the minimum price that you need to charge, because remember you probably want to make some profit too. So well, here’s the reality while it can vary from industry to industry, the most businesses, a 10% profit margin and businesses average and anything above that is very good. Most of the store owners expect that they should be earning 40 or 50% profit margins from my experience, but they are being extremely unrealistic, especially if you’re using paid traffic.

#+caption: explanation of good profit margin
 #+attr_html: :width 700px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d19.png

** hoodies

A good starting point then if you were running Facebook ads to your store will be depressed. Your products that say $25 plus free shipping or $24.99. And of course you can apply this product pricing strategy to pretty much all the products in your store. So let’s go and take hoodies.

 #+caption: printify hoodies
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d20.png

*** cheap hoodie
On printify, the lowest cost hoodie is a Gildan 18500. This is actually super comfortable by the way. So you could keep selling this hoodie into the future. But yes, Monster Digital, my favorite factory charge, $17.58 for it. And the price for shipping the hoodies is $8

#+caption: sweatshirts, hoodies and long sleeves
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d21.png

So if you add $17.58 and $8 to together that is $25.58.

*** using paypal calculator

Using the PayPal calculator, whether you live in the USA and optimistic paper phase or live outside of the USA like me and have international fees, you know that you’ll probably want to charge $27 as the minimum and this isn’t taking into account pay traffic when you’re selling your hoodie.

**** domestic

*** conclusions for hoodies (add it to tshirts)

- So if you had a free traffic strategy then, and you want it to get a 15 to 20% profit margin, then you probably want to go and charge around $32 or $34 for your hoodie. So as you can see, hoodies can be a very expensive option if you want to advertise them with Facebook ads. So for most people, I wouldn’t recommend that they start off using the hoodies for the Facebook ads and I’d recommend that they pick something a little bit more affordable, such as t-shirts. But you can still sell a hoodie because it could make for a great upsell. You could sell a t-shirt for $25 and make this your frontend product that you advertise on Facebook.

 #+caption: typical tshirt
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d24.png

- And then when a customer buys this, you could offer them a hoodie to buy it as well and price it the $31.95, because your customer has already bought the t-shirt, which paid for the Facebook advertising phase.

 #+caption: typical hoodie
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d25.png

*** suggestions regarding printify subscription

This hoodie is just extra profit, an extra bonus for you. Plus keep in mind, you are going to make more money in the future. For most beginners, I recommend that they use Printify for the print-on-demand app. Well, Printify has a premium subscription. It costs $29 a month. So you don’t need to buy this in the beginning. However, it drastically reduces the cost of your products once you buy it.

 #+caption: printify business plans
 #+attr_html: :width 800px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d26.png

**** when to switch to subscription
For example, the Gildan 5000 t-shirt from Monster Digital will go down to a price to just $6.09. So once you’ve got the t-shirts selling regularly, switching to a predefined premium subscription is a no brainer. So remember, in the beginning, while you may be making a smaller profit in the long term, your profit margins are going to increase well beyond your initial ones.

 #+caption: printify business plans
 #+attr_html: :width 700px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d27.png

** pricing discussion

*** it's subjective

- These are just the minimum prices. You can charge more. I charge $30 for my t-shirts. Pricing is entirely subjective.

- There is no answer to how much something is worth. We will just make it up in our heads. The phrase “The product is worth the price the customer is willing to pay.” is probably the most accurate thing that somebody can say. In regards to this question, the best way I need to understand how you should price your products is to understand how consumers decide how much they’re willing to pay.

*** price anchoring (compare pricing)
- And it’s through a process called price anchoring. Price anchoring is when consumers look at your product price and compare it to others and see how it matches up. So if you’re selling a t-shirt for $30, the customer goes, “Okay, well, how much have t-shirts elsewhere? If I go to Walmart, I know I can get a graphic tee shirt for $10 or $20.”

- And I know if I go to Etsy that I can go to a cool and local clothing brand and I can get t-shirts they for $30. And I know that if I go get a design, a Supreme t-shirt, I might pay up to $400, maybe even more. So now your consumer has a range of prices to judge you as against. And they go, “Okay, well, is this brand similar to the sort of quality that I expect at Walmart? Or is it more similar to the type of cool indie clothing branding that I see on my favorite Etsy stores?”

*** using presentation to make it high end
- And pretty much nobody new to the industry is able to create a highend streetwear brands. But, you can indeed aim for the higher-quality local, indie brand feel from the start, if you make their store experience curated, rather than feel cheap.

#+caption: example of streetwear brand shirt at smash store
 #+attr_html: :width 700px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d28.png

- So you can aim to price your products for that. If you’re able to match that level of presentation by creating a curated experience in your store instead of a cheap experience. And so what I recommend you do is that you study premium print-on-demand brands like Smash Transit. See how they present themselves. Do you think that you can match this level of presentation?

- Pricing is entirely subjective. If you can match Smash Transit’s presentation and the way that they create a curated experience for their niche customers, then you can charge $30 as well. But if you don’t think you can pull that off, that’s absolutely okay. You can lower your prices, but you need to be honest with your store’s level of presentation when you’re choosing how to price your products. So we’ve talked about how to price products with print-on-demand but what about dropshipping? Well, it’s pretty similar, but it’s got a bit of a twist.

** glasses example

*** calculate base value

What you want to do is you want to start out by taking the price of the product and the price of the shipping and combining it together. So let’s say you want the drop ship, these blue light glasses here. Well, the cost of the glasses, three dollars and 10 cents. Next, you want to add the shipping. So I selected the USA factory. So my customer would have fast shipping times and the cost of this was $4.79. So now you want to add them together, which is $7.89.

 #+caption: glasses $3.10
 #+attr_html: :width 500px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d29.png

*** payment processing fees
So we need to figure out now how much we need to charge. If we want to break-even after payment processing fees, using the PayPal fee calculator, we can see that whether we are using PayPal’s to mystic fee structure for USA, citizens will be slightly higher fee structure for people that don’t live in the USA, such as myself, we need to charge around $8.50, which we can round up to $9.

**** domestic
#+caption: paypal fee calculator - domestic
 #+attr_html: :width 700px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d30.png

**** international
#+caption: paypal fee calculator - international
 #+attr_html: :width 700px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d31.png

*** break even price
So our break even price is $9. And of course, remember, as I stated earlier, you never want to say a clean price. You want to have say $8.99 or $8.97 or $8.95. You wouldn’t want to charge $9 exactly. Charging a round number like $9 is something that premium high-end stores like Burberry do, which is why this pricing strategy is indeed called prestige pricing.

#+caption: prestige priced tshirt example
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d32.png

So if you tried to do it for lower cost items, customers would find that really weird and unprofessional. But of course, remember, this is just our break-even costs. If we are having a free traffic source, this does not account for the cost of Facebook ads. So if you had a free traffic source, such as Google SEO traffic, or an Instagram main page, then your breakeven price point that you would need to charge would be $8.95, or $8.99 or $8.97, but you probably want to make some profit too.

*** ideal profit margin
Don’t you well remember an average profit margin in businesses, 10%. So if you can, 15 to 20% profit, then that would be great. So a base price of around $11 or $12 would be good with free traffic to still give yourself a nice profit margin.

#+caption: good profit margin description
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d33.png

*** pricing difference if using advertising
- But what if you’re not using a free traffic source? What if you were using paid ads such as Facebook ads? Well, if you’re doing niche, then we need to use a slightly different pricing strategy. And we are also going to have to use a slightly higher pricing strategy compared to what we were charging for print-on-demand products.

- And the reason for this is that with print on demand, you have absolute control over the products that you’re selling. So you can design a product that is perfect for your target customer because of this, we usually expect our print on demand products are going to have higher conversion rates.

- So when it comes to dropshipping, since we expect them to have lower conversion rates, we need to allow for a higher Facebook ad budget.

**** calculation for advertising
What you should instead do, is take the price of your product – so in this case here, it was $3.10, then the price of shipping, which in this case here was $4.79, add them together, which was $7.89, then times that number by 3, which is 23.67. Then round that up to the nearest dollar, so a good product price would be $24, i.e. $23.95

#+caption: $3.10 base for glasses example
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d34.png

***** give half of the profit to advertising
Why? Well, we just need to do the math. We want to allow that 50% revenue to go towards our Facebook ad budget. So $24 minus 50% is $12.

**** paypal calculator (with advertising)
All right, so now we have $12 left over while we now need to remove payment processing fee.

And depending on if you live in the USA or internationally like me, it will be either $1 or $1.35. So let’s go with $1.35 for the sake of this video. $12 minus $1.35 is $10.65.

***** domestic

***** international
#+caption: international paypal calculator
#+attr_html: :width 700px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d36.png

**** take away product price
And if we minus the product price from that, which is $7.89, then we are left with $2.76! So our profit is just over 10%.

#+caption: glasses product cost
#+attr_html: :width 600px
file:../../_share/media/img/step_02/lesson_17/d37.png

*** 10% profit margin
- Which is a nice goal to aim for, because an average profit margin for a business is 10%. And this is very important to keep in mind. I understand most new business owners think 10% is low, but those people have wildly unrealistic expectations.

**** adding upsells
- And remember: as you add in upsells, and customers purchase more than 1 item from you at a time, then this profit margin will drastically improve too and go up much higher than 10%, it will become more like 15 to 25%!

**** you don't have to stay at 10% profit margin
And of course, this is just the minimum. Dropshippers have generally been charging $30 with free shipping for these blue light glasses very successfully. So the 3 times pricing rule is a starting point. If you improve your store branding & marketing, you can push this much higher!

**** there is no law about sticking to a formula
And remember, there is no “formula” to success. There are best practices based on what has worked in the past for sellers but that doesn’t mean new innovations can’t be made.

If from experience you think you should price products differently, go for it. If you’d like a guide to help you if you have no previous experience, then these pricing guides are a great starting point.

So keep these pricing rules in mind later as we’ll be using them in Step 3 when we add the products we’ve found to our store. For now, it’s time to move onto the next video.

* Description

 #+attr_html: :width 600px
 file:../../_share/media/img/step_03/lesson_05/Preview.png

* Description

#+attr_html: :width 600px

1. And then you want to choose the product that you want to add. Printful has a lot of different product including lots of tshirt. Now, you can choose whatever tshirt you want but this one here is my favorite one to use. it’s good for beginners because it’s a great balance of quality and price.
