S05|21 - how to create an example video ad

Notes

Description

Hello everyone! Im Zac Lawson, a professional videographer from Newport Beach, California and Im going to teach you how to 4 things that you need to learn to shoot your own product demonstration video along with some tips and tricks along the way.

So the first thing we are going to talk about is gear, You dont need a lot of gear when filing these type of videos. Im going to use my Apple iPhone X to shoot these videos but you dont have to use an iPhone to shoot these videos, you can use any other smartphone that you do have.

The next piece of gear that you will need is a table in order to demonstrate your product. I like to use a wooden table because I think it looks good on film but you can use any table that you have around your house.

Next gear that you will need is a subject. You have a budget for the subject then that is great but you can always use a friend or a family member and offer to buy them lunch or give them one of your product that youre selling for free for their time.

The second concept that were going to talk about today is lighting. This is going to be an important aspect of your video. It can make the difference between a really really good video and a really really bad video.

So natural light would be your absolute best friend when it comes to filming this type of video. You want to position your product next to a window that shoots of plenty of natural light when shooting your product.

position product next to window with natural light

The next concept that were going over is how to set up your products in order to shoot them. This is where youll be setting up the scene a little bit. The first thing to remember when shooting your product is to always put your product in the appropriate setting that they would normally be used in. For example, if youre shooting this travel backpack, you want your setting to be in the bedroom or someone in the living room packing up their belongings for a trip.

The next thing to remember is to always shoot someone or yourself using the product how they are meant to be used so that you can demo your product to your viewers and so that viewers can get an understanding how the product is used and what features it does have.

Then you will need to set up your product in a display like fashion. So for the fish grocery bag, you can set it up in the kitchen like they are on display, kinda like when youre in a store and youre shopping for them.

The last thing were going to talk about is what shots you are going to need to film for your own product demonstration video. You will need to shot a total of about 13 to 16 different clips to fill up a 30 second video. So thats about 2 and 1/2 seconds to 3 seconds per clip. The way Im going to teach you how to make these videos is kinda of like a puzzle, so you can film the shots that you need and plug them in the spot in the timeline and not have to think about it too much.

So the first shot you need is a time lapse of you using the product. For example, with the fish grocery bag, you will need someone unpacking the groceries and packing them back up so the viewers can understand what the product is and how it is used.

Ive mentioned also that you will need detail shots for your video. These are the types of  shots where your product is on display and you are showing your viewers all the different details of your product. I recommend shooting this clip with little camera movements, only panning to the left or right. And try to avoid quick movements with the camera.

The next type of shot you need is your subject actually demoing your product and you will need about 8 to 10 shots. For example, it can be a shot of you packing up using the backpack or using the usb charging port. Id like to recommend doing these shots with no camera movements with your subject doing all the movements

So thats all I have for you guys in this tutorial and now that you have all the shots you need, you are now ready to move on to the editing process.
