Notes on Lesson 06 - Selections | PiXimperfect

Notes

selection tool intro

  1. a selection is an area we are targeting
  2. the quick selection tools try to find edges
  3. you can increase or decrease the size of the brush via the ][ keys
  4. select with the brush by painting over what you want

how to make selections

  1. lasso tools

    • marquee tools
    • quick selection tool
    • object selection tool

      • click on the icon
      • choose the mode (rectangle or lasso)
      • circle the object

lasso & polygonal lasso tool

  • select anything with the lasso tool
  • to switch between lasso and polygonal hit ALT

lasso tool

close the selection
  • double click
deselect
  • CMD+D
create a new layer with selection
  • go to layers and select the layer you want
  • hit CMD+J
content aware fill
  • Edit-> Content Aware Fill
fill the area with a color
  • OPT+DELETE

polygonal

deletes last point
  • CMD+DELETE

adding and take away

  • subtract: ALT
  • add: SHIFT
you can also do this using buttons

quick selection

  • tries to find the edges of the object
  • all you have to do is just paint over it

sample all layers

  • when checked off it only looks at the currently selected layer
  • when check on, it looks at all layers under the cursor when making a selection

make a mask

just click the mask button in selection

place image on top of another

  1. create a new layer based on the original by dragging the original layer down to the plus button

    • the cursor will change to a hand symbol and you will have to move that over the correct button

  2. click the mask button on the new layer
  3. add an image between the original and the new selected one
  4. pick a different blending mode (ie linear burn) that will affect the background of the original image but not the selected section which you place above
  5. use curves to lighten parts of the image

    • you can limit the curve effect using masks

      1. select the mask icon
      2. click CMD+I
      3. paint the white area you want to use
      4. use a gradient white-black

select sky

exactly what it sounds like

select subject

in the top bar under 'select subject' you can drop down and choose to use adobe's servers

color range

  1. select->color range
  2. color range dialog box

    • in the Color Range dialog box click the Select dropdown

      • select a default color / pattern
      • leave on default 'sampled colors'
    • in selection Preview at the bottom, you can choose to use one of the previews, or turn it off
    • eye dropper

      • you can clic, hold and select an area of colors
  3. at this point turn on the mask ALT+mask button
  4. there may still be shades of the color - remove it via HUE ADJUSTMENT LAYER

    1. add hue adjust ment layer
    2. create a clipping mask to apply the adjustment layer to the image

      • ALT KEY
      • click on the clipping mask button in the Properties dialog for the hue adjustment layer in the lower left corner

    3. click on the 'Master' drop down and pick a color

    4. set hue and saturation over to the right (that's what he suggests) so you can more easily see what you are doing
    5. adjust the color dimensions in the lowest tab

    • pick a view method to display selection

  3. select the quick selection brush

    • adjust brush via ][ or Ctl+Opt+Drag
  4. select basic area you want

refining selection

  • click refine hair if there is hair

  • select refine brush and paint over area

Save Selection

  • Menu->Select->Save Selection

to regain the selction

channels
  • in the Layer section, select the channel tab
  • in the channel list should be the selectin
  • CMD+thumbnail of selection
load selection

Menu->select->Load Selection

Modify Selection

Contract

  • have a selection
  • Select->Modify->Contract
  • choose number of pixels
to invert the selection

CMD+SHIFT+I

to fill up the space

OPT+DELETE

Expand

  • Select->Modify->Expand
  • expands the size of the selection

Feather

  • softens selection
